ON-SITE STORAGE OF GRP

GRP (glass fibre) mouldings are a ‘semi-liquid’ product.  They do not possess the rigidity of wood or metal.  For the first few weeks after manufacture, particular care must be taken in storage, as units are still curing and will ‘take a shape’ from which they will not recover.  Do not allow units to fill or puddle with water which can cause distortion.

In practice this means that units should be stored flat, preferably under cover.  Due to the light weight of the products damage may occur in windy conditions.  On no account should weight be put on them to hold them down.

Columns

Protect plinths etc. where necessary from accidental damage.  Do not place in position where tension may result in twisting.

Door Surrounds

Pilasters (legs) should be stored flat.  Do not lean against a wall etc. without full support underneath or bowing may result.  The fixing flange on the head must be kept flat.

Bay Tops & Canopies

The flange must be flat on the ground, i.e. with the fascia pointing upwards.

DO NOT

(1)     Store with weight on the top flange.

(2)     Stack on top of each other or hold down with weight.

(3)     Store on gel coat finish, scratches will result.

(4)     Apply abnormal tension during installation.

(5)     Stand on units during or after installation.

Porticos

If not installed promptly, larger flat or apex-roofed portico units may tend to ‘spread’ under their own weight.  Place battens inside porticoes as required to maintain shape until ready for installation.

Cornice

These must be stored flat on their backs until installed.
